Breakfast Workshop
08 May 2013

PER hosted another interesting Breakfast Workshop on Tuesday 30th April

The title was “What is Employee Engagement and why does it matter?” presented by David MacLeod.

David was commissioned by the Department for Business (BIS) to take an in-depth look at employee engagement and report on its potential benefits for organisations and employees. He co-authored the MacLeod Report, Engaging for Success and is Chair of the Government sponsored, employer led Task Force on Employee Engagement launched by the Prime Minister at Number 10 in March 2011. He is also a visiting Professor of the Cass Business School and co-author of The Extra Mile.

David is in high demand as an expert and passionate speaker on this topic and we were extremely fortunate that he was able to fit a session at our Breakfast Workshop into his amazingly hectic schedule. You will find numerous internet references and you tube videos related to him and his work.

David answered the question ‘What is Employee Engagement and why does it matter?’.  He outlined the evidence for enhanced business performance, showed how it could be measured and outlined the four enablers which successful organisations use to improve and maintain engagement.

PER trip to Warsaw February 2013
27 Feb 2013

We’ve recently had an interesting fact-finding trip to Warsaw to meet a number of active local PE firms and a handful of strong candidates.

It’s easy to forget that the whole market economy in Poland is less than 25 years old, so the private equity industry remains still very much a young business. A number of founder-entrepreneurs are approaching the point where they wish to sell their businesses to LBOs but many still plan to run them for some years to come and will only contemplate bringing in minority PE investors for growth capital. This makes the quality of interpersonal relationships all the more significant (if you are selling out completely you may be less concerned about the new owner than if you are formally partnering with them), and drives a more old fashioned, but possibly fundamentally more sophisticated longer term origination model, based around getting to know owners over a period of time, outside a formal auction process. This requires patience and emotional intelligence, not just raw financial analysis. It also usually needs to be led by local investors, so there is understandably a clear preference to develop Polish-nationals in investment teams.

The economy itself is somewhat volatile, with current gdp growth estimates ranging from 0 to 2,5% (up and down quarter to quarter) but over the medium term its growth profile still looks favourable relative to many of the Western European markets, driven fundamentally by a strong export culture, if not by consistently robust domestic demand, and with a population approaching 40m this clearly has a lot of critical mass.

Fundraising is a hot topic here, as elsewhere. Structurally, Polish pension funds and institutions are not permitted to invest in PE, so all funds have to be raised from foreign investors. Many are drawn by the growth characteristics of a ‘near’ emerging market, and a better combination of entry pricing and operational upside. However, Polish funds have also undoubtedly suffered the contamination of the Euro effect, with many US institutional investors in particular avoiding exposure to the wider Euro-area. Several of the leading domestic and CEE funds are going to market simultaneously, chasing the same LPs and clearly not all will hit their targets. A number of other funds are sitting on their hands, watching anxiously and waiting for the crowd to disperse before launching their own PPMs once the dust has settled. Interestingly, in such a young market, the general trend is to wish other competitors well in their fundraising to build confidence and scale in the overall market, rather than exploit each other’s short term weakness.

The Polish PE market is still developing. Perhaps some of the larger transactions are being driven by advisers and investors from outside the country, but the domestic firms and advisers are independently building strong and distinctive reputations and look well placed to become a truly significant part of the overall European market.  PER is fast building a strong pool of junior and mid level candidates within Poland and would be pleased to discuss this in more detail with any firms wishing to build their local teams, please contact Rupert Bell on rupert.bell@perecruit.com

PER's Latest Successful Breakfast Workshop
26 Jun 2012

"Avoiding boardroom blunders and getting your mid-level team board-effective as quickly as possible."  By external speaker Richard Connell.

Private Equity People Matters latest Breakfast Workshop was held on Tuesday 19th June to a large audience.

“I’m from the investors and I’ve come to help you” is just one of the many boardroom blunders that Richard has seen in a 30 year private equity career with the last 15 years as chairman of a series of significant private equity backed businesses including Ideal Stelrad Group, Dignity plc and Cory Environmental.

As Richard says, representing the money puts the investor in a powerful position in the boardroom and with thoughtful handling can lead to spectacular results.  Poor handling however can demotivate management and result in a worrying lack of openness.  When mid-level investment professionals first take on board roles their inexperience can show. Richard’s session provided a practical guide to helping these newcomers to the board to get up to speed as quickly as possible.

Richard used anecdotes and case studies to illustrate functional and dysfunctional board situations, effective and ineffective boardroom strategies and pragmatic methods for challenging management and getting results.  He is a witty and informative speaker and everyone enjoyed the discussion immensely.

Please contact Leonie Wilson if you’d like to join us for our next Breakfast Workshop or if you would like a transcript of the discussion.

Private Equity Conference for Mexico
22 May 2012

PER were delighted to sponsor the Seventh Annual Private Equity Conference for Mexico, a meeting organized by the local industry association, Asociación Mexicana de Capital Privado (AMEXCAP).  The conference, with close to 400 participants, brought together the leaders of both national and international LPs, private equity, venture capital and fund of funds.

The Mexico based PER team, led by Victoria Hyde, had a chance to meet with potential and existing investors in Mexico. Given Victoria’s expertise and experience of having worked for six years at PER’s headquarters in London, the conference provided the perfect setting for Victoria to present new business opportunities to international LPs by introducing them to Local GPs and pension funds, the Afores.  PER’s sponsorship of the AMEXCAP conference also offered an opportunity to expand PER’s broad network among candidates working in or interested in pursuing a career with PE.

PER is excited about being part of the dynamic and growing PE market in Mexico. Driven by recent regulatory changes allowing Afores to invest in PE - along with a growing internal market with a healthy appetite for goods and services in diverse sectors including  health, education, IT, real estate, infrastructure  and the FMCG - PE funds are poised to take advantage of the promising investment climate. PER offers firsthand experience and knowledge to many PE funds in recruiting and developing the talent necessary to seize opportunities in Mexico.

PER's 2011 Year Summary
02 Jan 2012

Despite the economic conditions, we saw a relatively stable recruitment demand across Europe in 2011 and increasing demand in some emerging markets. In Europe, we saw a shift in the types of roles recruited for rather than any increase in volume. In particular, there was increased demand for fund raising, investor relations and fund investing experience at all levels with more modest levels of hiring in the direct investment teams.

We also saw mid-market private equity interest in big four lead advisors and financial due diligence managers throughout the year and we had a sense of improving quality from these backgrounds.

HR Breakfast Workshop
28 Sep 2011

‘Recent research has shown that only 44% of CEOs deliver returns of two times or more to their private equity backers. Our breakfast workshop focused on identifying the characteristics of success.’

Dr Sabine Dembkowski, an international executive coach and co-author of ‘7 Steps to Effective Executive Coaching’ put together a highly practical session on the distinguishing characteristics of successful CEOs in private equity backed businesses. Using research by Professor Steven Kaplan at Chicago Booth School of Business, Sabine was able to show the worrying results that only 44% of CEOs deliver returns of two times or more to their private equity backers. Kaplan and his team identified 14 characteristics that the high performers displayed.  Sabine was able to show us how to identify these characteristics in the CEOs through a mix of competency based questions, 360% feedback and psychometric profiling. The result was a highly pragmatic guide that private equity professionals can use in due diligence on their management teams.  To receive a free copy of this guide, email us at info@perecruit.com.

A Busy Summer for PER
06 Sep 2011

It has been a busy summer for PER with 30 new roles opened in August and early September. There is a strong international flavour to our new mandates with four in Mexico, five in Germany, two in Switzerland,  two in the Middle East and one in Asia.

Investor relations and fund raising continues to have a significant presence with 20% of the new roles in this growing area.  There is a smattering of venture capital and infrastructure as well as healthy amount of analyst and associate hiring across the private equity market.

However, we are seeing a note of caution from some clients and will continue to keep an eye on the economic conditions and monitor their affect on hiring in the private equity sector.

Private Equity Recruitment / HR Professionals Workshop – 21st June
22 Jun 2011

Behind the Front Line – the Heart of the Organisation - Malcolm Harris

Malcolm Harris joined us as  guest speaker on Tuesday 21st June as we hosted our latest HR Breakfast Workshop to discuss valuing and developing the support team, the people behind the front line. Malcolm is well placed to lead the discussion on this topic having worked in HR for the last 26 years, most recently as Head of HR for a start-up investment bank in the Middle East. Right now, Malcolm is developing a coaching practice and training with CTI, a pioneering firm accredited by the International Coach Federation with over 21,000 trained coaches to its credit. He is passionate about accelerating positive change and works mainly with CEOs, senior management teams and entrepreneurs.

Malcolm prepared a great presentation, reflecting that in the world of private equity, the purpose of front line teams is clear and straightforward: to secure funds and deliver high-returning investment opportunities. For this they receive handsome rewards which align with success.  For private equity support staff, it is not so clear. Maximising their contribution and rewarding them in a way which achieves tremendous impact demands different  programmes and improved understanding of what fulfils them in their work.

All who attended found it to be an informative and intriguing interactive event, where we drew on real life examples in private equity and took a fresh, closer look at what really drives support staff and what practical steps we can take immediately to tap their tremendous potential, transform their experience of work and reward them fully, uniquely and individually.

Private Equity Recruitment / HR Professionals Workshop - 29th March

Revised FSA Remuneration Code – Tim Wright, PriceWaterhouse Coopers & Private Equity Recruitment Banking Associate First Quarter Bonus and Salary Update

On Tuesday we hosted our latest HR Breakfast Workshop. This quarter we discussed how the Revised FSA Remuneration Code will affect pay and bonuses within private equity, both from a recruiting perspective but also compensating existing staff.

We invited Tim Wright, a Director at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, to speak at this event. Tim is an expert on compensation issues related to the asset management industry.

Although on the face of it, the subject is quite dry, Tim gave a fascinating and challenging account of the issues that could face private equity over the next year or two with regard to disclosure of remuneration to the FSA. Tim did a great job of shedding some light on what is clearly a very complex issue.

PER also took the opportunity to give an update on banking Associate pay including first quarter bonus payments, base salary increases and numbers of bankers in each year group across the main banks, this is always a topic of high interest.

PER in the Middle East
08 Mar 2011

Gail McManus and Oliver Gilkes recently visited Doha, the capital of Qatar, and Abu Dhabi in order to meet a number of exciting, growing clients in the region.

The Middle East continues to be a priority for PER. It is an exciting time for both economies as they continue to grow both economically and in diversity.

Qatar’s economic growth has been particularly strong. Their nominal GDP, estimated to be $128 billion in 2010, grew by 15.9% in 2010. Qatar's 2007 per capita GDP was $67,000, and is projected to soon be the highest in the world. The Qatari Government's strategy is to utilise its wealth to generate more wealth by diversifying the economic base of the country beyond hydrocarbons.

The Abu Dhabi economy also continues to grow. Abu Dhabi is currently developing a major new cultural district on Saadiyat Island (an island 500 metres off the Abu Dhabi mainland), including The Louvre Abu Dhabi art gallery. This will further strengthen Abu Dhabi’s attractiveness as a place to both live and work.

A Super 2010 and a Good Start to 2011
31 Jan 2011

We are delighted to say that 2010 was a busy year for PER and 2011 has started well. We had more than 100 of our candidates start in new jobs with our clients last year, from Analyst to Partner and from Cleantech to Investor Relations, which is an upcoming part of the business. And this year has started equally well with another eighteen taking up their posts in the New Year.

Our placement split by level has remained consistent with analyst and associates entering into private equity for the first time representing about 60% of our placements and the balance splitting roughly equally between mid level and senior hires.

We are optimistic for 2011 and start the year with over 20 new roles and a strong pipeline of searches and great client relationships in place.

So a super 2010 and a good start to 2011. Long may it continue.
